The Good Ol' Days

As the holidays rapidly approach, we here at Zombie vs Shark began to feel a bit nostalgic and misty eyed for the good old days of when Jaye and Tony would hang out in Plan B Studios and record a show they thought was good....oh how they were wrong!
So unfortunately for all you listeners out there, they decided to head back into the studio and record a short piece to reminisce about the old days and regale you with tales of not so long ago.  Just download this week's offering and listen quietly, nod politely and smile gently at the boys...and maybe they will never do anything like this ever again!

The VS Episode: Part Deux

This must be the happiest and saddest you have felt all year.  The VS Episode has arrived and that means all sorts of pop culture trivia and head-to-head battles and of course our hot wives!  However the VS Episode also signals the end of the season and the start of our upcoming time off.
We have selected our two listener contestants, Shawn and Joanna, who did a great job and contributed in some big BIG ways (you'll hear).  There were some tough questions, some easy ones and after a long hard fought battle we did have a clear winner.  So tune in now to find out who became the next 'King of the Podcast,' 'Duke/Duchess of the Podcast,' and which listener earned a chance to come back to Plan B Studios and co-host their very own episode of Zombie vs Shark!
As you enjoy our season finale, keep in mind that will be returning for our third season on the the new year.  But in the meantime we will have several special items for you, including some video clips!  So, until 2012 folks don't get eaten by zombies.

You Aught To Watch These Films From The Aughts

In 'You're Proud Of That?' we close out our four-part installment of horror films by decade!  We journeyed from the 1970s, through 1980s, past 1990s and finally arrived to the 2000s; and we hope you all enjoyed the trip.  Frankly, we feel that this episode is one of our funniest episodes.  But that is not to take away from the great films we discuss.
As Halloween draws near, we suggest you and your friends gather together to view some great films that scare!  As Jaye would say...take a little from column A and a little from column B and sprinkle in some from column C.  In other words, make up some fun movie nights from the films we shared with you from the past 40 years and remember to leave the lights on.
Also, don't forget to email us (zombievs.shark@yahoo.com subject heading VS episode) for your chance to be apart of the VS episode in a few weeks.  Tell us what pop culture knowledge you have and who's team you would like to be on and you just might get a chance.

The 90s Were Like, So Yesterday!

Halfway through our special horror films by decade lead-up to Halloween and we are having a blast! Hopefully you are too! Up next...duh, the 1990s. Haven't you been listening? The 90s were very interesting as it appeared to be an amalgamated mix of films. You can definitely see the 80s influence early, but by the mid-90s SCREAM creates a new path of self-aware horror films. Finally, at the end of the decade there was an infusion of Japanese horror films and continued into the 2000s.
So download 'The iZombie?' now and then hit up your favorite place for DVDs to get your list of 90s films to enjoy! Also, please please please don't forget to send in your zombie questions as we are quickly approaching our zombie episode. On last thing...don't miss this episode to hear a very big, very special announcement. We are waiting.

Wanna play on our team?

We are looking for a few good women (and I guess men) who would like to participate in the end of the season challenge on ZOMBIE VS SHARK.
I know what you're thinking, "but guys, I thought it was a battle for 'King' of the podcast? How can I be on?" Great question invisible voice in my head. Here's how...
Since adding the legendary Joe Smith and the amazing Elynnes Parx it really couldn't be just a battle for King of the Podcast now could it.
So we will be playing teams. Tony and Jaye will still be fighting it out for King of the Podcast. Joe and Elynnes will be battling for Duke/Duchess of the Podcast. AND HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN...
We each need a third for our team.
"but guys, what's in it for me?"
Another great question invisible voice in my head.
You, on the winning team, get to not only pick a topic for a future podcast, but you get to co-host with us AND you get to select all the musical breaks for that episode.
"Alright alright, how do I get on the team? And stop thanking me already it's getting weird."
Please write in to ZombieVS.Shark@yahoo.com and let us know what makes you the best teammate for our game show? Tell us what your pop culture areas of expertise are and whose team you would like to be on.
Send them in ASAP

Then, There Was The 80s!

What do you think of when you hear '80s horror movies?' Is it a movie franchise, a certain movie monster/villain, a specific death scene? In this week's episode 'Impressionable Youths' we are certain that it was covered. In the 80s there was such a jumble of films, however when it was all said and done, we had the birth of the slasher film!
Who takes it for you, Freddy or Jason? We discuss several of the scare factors that makes those two stand out monsters and we would love to hear what you think. Also, don't forget to get your zombie questions in for this season zombie episode coming up in just 2 short weeks! Email, Twitter, posting a comment here on the site are all great ways of getting in touch with us. Until next week...don't die.

70s Horror, Will You Survive?

This week's episode 'Based On Actual Events' is the first installment of our four installment lead-up to Halloween. It is also the first time ZvS has done installments, but that's what we are all about, bringing you firsts. First up is horror films of the 70s, but we broke it down a little further and chose to focus on the sub-genres of the occult and 'realism' (shit that could actually happen).
Follow along as we discuss such notable films ranging from THE EXORCIST to THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, as well as some films that are not as well known. As always, we hope you learn something and find some new films to enjoy that you may not normally have given a second glance. But don't fill up on this episode as we have three more installments for you, next week we discuss 80s slasher films.
One last note of interest, our final episode before Halloween and our second to last episode of the season will be our zombie episode. So get those questions and comments in so we can talk about it on the show, thank you to those that have already sent us stuff, keep it up. Just use our email below or post a comment on the site, thank you.

Help Us Help You

As you may have heard on last weeks podcast @ElihuSmails1978 (Joe) and @jayeofmanyhats (Jaye) are having a listener fueled playlist challenge.
What does this mean?
Joe and Jaye will be each creating a separate playlist based on an emotion YOU the listener suggest. We already have a few suggestions that are great but would LOVE more to pick from.
After we get a bunch of "emotions" we will give one to Joe to build his playlist and one to Jaye to build his.
Once those are done we will post them on here and on iTunes and you will let us know how well (or bad) they did.
Help make this challenge a fun and exciting one, I know Joe and Jaye are looking forward to it.

The Best Years Of Our Lives

If you had to pick your four best years, which would they be...high school or college? Well when it comes to movies you don't have to choose. In this week's episode, 'I'm Going Prowlin' we discuss several films set on or near a school campus, regardless of your favorite setting we are sure you will find a favorite or two.
Also, we announce in this week's episode our topics for our last shows of the season, including our zombie episode! So start submitting your questions and comments now so we can address them in our upcoming episode.
While you are thinking of all those great questions to send in, don't forget to download this week's episode, because we all worked really hard on it and feel like it is deserving of a listen. Ah, but what does it matter? What do you care? You see us as you want to see us- in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal.

Dear Netflix, stop f#@$ing emailing me

If you are a Netflix costumer like I am then you recently were sent an email from them "explaining" their idiotic business moves as of late. I went to their blog to post this return letter however in order to post a comment on their blog you must sign in through facebook, way to go alienating yet more costumers Netflix.
So here you go...my email response to Mr. Hastings.

Dear Reed Hastings CEO of Netflix,
You're whiny email was pouring salt into the fresh wound YOU caused. I don't care your reasons for screwing over your customers, it's the fact you did it AND now feel so justified in doing it (even after seeing you stocks drop and somehow being surprised that not every followed along with your scheme) that upsets me even more.
You just sat back and expected everyone to spend twice as much for what they were already getting at an amazing deal. Did you not think your customers would simply choose one over the other? I know many people who have Netflix and had to flip the coin on which they wanted the slow DVD by mail however having a lot more movies at your fingertips, or the fast service with limited choices of streaming.
I chose streaming, what with your competitors at REDBOX or Blockbuster Express I can go get DVDs much faster than mail and it STILL costs less than your dvd service.
You rumored that you were going full streaming if this is how you are doing it than I feel deceived.
I will gladly keep streaming in the hope that you and your company pulls it's collective head out of it's collective arse and realize that you need to go make more deals getting more tv shows and movies to streaming. And don't say that's what this split will do, all this is is a grab for more money and you know it.
I will be waiting for your email in two months sadly admitting this fact.
Sincerly,
Jaye, a pissed off costumer

What A Finish!!!

We here at Zombie vs Shark try each week to provide listeners with quality and entertainment...not always together though. Which is why we are sad to say that this week's episode 'It Was All A Dream' experienced technical difficulties. Unbeknownst to us, while recording, one of our microphones picked up an 'angry growl' that stayed with us all the way up until the end.
If you are able to overlook that, what follows this week is a discussion about some of the best and worst finishes to film. We must warn you though, there may be spoilers; seeing as how all we are talking about is the end of films. So sit back and relax as we share more of our favorite and not so favorite films with you all.

“That is Scripture” -@ElihuSmails1978

“That is Scripture”
A “Review” of Red State
A film by Kevin Smith

A little history behind the story of Red State is a good place to start.  Zombie vs. Shark wishlister Kevin Smith took what I would call a big leap from the normal.  Not just the Smith idea of normal filmmaking but a big leap from what “normal” filmmaking has been in recent memory.  Get this, Red State is not a remake, reboot, super hero, reimagining or sequel.  I know, shocking.    Red State was made on a small, by industry terms, budget.  Four million is what Smith had to work with and you can see he used every penny smartly.  Smith also decided to distribute the movie himself instead of selling it to a major studio such as Universal who distributed Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.  This is truly a departure from the way most movies have been made and sold to use the audience in the past.  For the full story behind Smith’s innovative imagination and risk, go to www.smodcast.com and listen to the RED STATE OF THE UNION podcast.

Now, to be honest, I have been looking forward to this film more than any movie possibly in my lifetime.  Let us start at what in my opinion is possibly the most important part of any good film, the script.  Anyone who has seen Kevin Smith’s body of work understands he is an incredible wordsmith, no pun intended.  He can put pen to paper and come up with some of the best-scripted dialogue imaginable.  He did not disappoint in Red State.  But like I have said this is not a typical Smith movie.  Yes there is some “crude” humor and lengthy speeches in the film but they are all well placed.  The difference in Red State is the movie isn’t revolving around the dialogue as much as using it to move this story along.  As for the story, I would say that it is best described as the story of a cult and how extreme people's beliefs can be and what those beliefs can cause.  The movie is pretty much a three-part film, as Smith described himself.  The first part being in the Smith genre, meaning good dialogue with crude humor.  The second part however completely takes a path away from that.  Dialogue yes, but in no way crude.  I would describe the second part of Red State as The Cooper Family.  Don’t want to give too much away but when you have seen the film you will understand.  The final part is all in all a Waco Texas standoff off with a ton of ammunition.

So for the acting, one word AMAZING.  I will begin by saying Michael Parks, as Abin Cooper is one of the finest acting performances I have seen.  He is able to play a “villain” in a way that doesn’t make you fear him but makes you uncomfortable.  His ability to so strongly believe he is right and the world is wrong makes him a character I would never want to be around.  Melissa Leo plays Sara, Abin Cooper’s daughter.  If you have never seen Melissa Leo act you are missing something special.  She is able to put so much behind a subtle look that you can almost tell what she is thinking.  John Goodman plays special agent Joseph Keenan of the ATF.  Goodman is one of my favorite on screen storytellers.  He does not disappoint during Red State.  I am sure that Park’s speech will be talked about much more but I was more impressed with Goodman’s speech towards the end of the film.  Michael Angarano, Nicholas Braun and Kyle Gallner play three high school friends to perfection.  Kerry Bishe plays Cheyenne, Abin Cooper’s granddaughter.  She is able to show heart in a family where you are sure there is none.  Stephen Root puts a lot of heart and fear into Sheriff Wynan.  The list could go on and on.

Now to say I thought Red State was flawless would be a grave mistake.  I was not crazy about the end of the film but was very pleased it did not go in the direction I thought it was while I was watching.  I did feel like Park’s speech went on a little to long, but there was enough breaks in it to keep you listening to what he had to say.

All that being said, I would strongly recommend this movie to people who enjoy Acting, Creative Camera Work, Perfect Scenery, Unexpected Plot Moves and Characters That Will Haunt You.

Oh and a small side note, Red State is available for rent on many VOD platforms, such as on iTunes, where the price of this rental is $9.99 for 24 hours.  Yes that is higher than normal but when you understand the story behind distribution it will not seem inappropriate. Think of it in terms of movie ticket prices, for the same price as a ticket you can watch it in the comfort of your own home. Even cheaper if you invite friends over and everyone chips in.

Well here we are at my playlist. What do I say about it? When I asked all the crew to come up with playlists that would help the listeners get to know them better I didn't put much thought in the fact I'D have to do it too. It was very hard to narrow it down, so hard in fact that I ended up making two more playlists then I needed (so expect another couple rounds of this in the future). I guess without further ado...

All Hail Queen!

On the heels of our musical episode, we continue the melodic theme by discussing the music of Queen. We here at Zombie vs Shark feel that Queen is often underappreciated by the music fans because they don't have new music, staying on top of the charts and even considered stadium rock.
However, when you look further into their music you will see how diverse and well orchestrated it was. The individual talents of the band members is amazing alone, but when they came together as Queen they put out some of the best music available. Tune your dial to 'He Done Did Hid It' to hear our discussion on one of our favorite bands of all-time!
