The greats: Snake, Harry, Samus Aran, Thyra, Link, Icarus, Duke, Fox McCloud, Mac, Sonic and of course Mario. While wielding such memorable weapons as a magical boomerang, sacred bow, fireball, pepper cellar, morphing ball, a battle axe or their own fists we guided them on their journey through levels, mazes, underworlds, space and even time all for our thrill and amusement.
We would rise and fall with their accomplishments...they would rise and fall with the speed of our thumbs and swiftness of our reactions. As we passed the hours away, saving our progress when we can; whether it be through checkpoints, hand written codes or simply pressing 'pause' then 'save' we would boast to our friends about which high levels we reached or our score ranking in the top three. We clamored around to find out if someone unlocked a secret level or learned how to defeat a certain 'boss.' Often spending our allowances or birthday money, one quarter at a time in front of the glowing screens and flashing lights of an arcade game, even if for two minutes of joy.
Yes, many have said that video games have been a bane on society...maybe it has, maybe it hasn't; but for those of us who look back on that golden age of video games fondly and as an integral part of our childhood Zombie vs. Shark presents 'Three Pixels Strong' so sit back and close your eyes as visions of scrolling screens, fantastical worlds, spinning coins, health meters and game controls with less than two buttons swirl across your mind. Oh and feel free to utter those three words that brought so much excitement, “I...got...next!”
Also, in studio with us this week was DJ Monkey Spünk! Which means we have a brand new segment of Hookers & Blow just for you folks out there...so enjoy the show!
